San Diego Design Week, Sept. 21-25, has a full slate of programs — from films to talks to tours — and Friends of San Diego Architecture will get a chance to get a preview of what’s in store from two participants.

Sean Bacon is a professor, passionate designer, and obsessive typophile who teaches a wide range of classes at San Diego City College. He also helps direct and manage the graphic design program and its administrative responsibilities. He brings his wealth of experiences and insight to help produce many of the award-winning portfolios from the college. He has worked for The Daily Aztec, Jonathan Segal Architecture, Parallax Visual Communication and Silent Partner. He attended City College and San Diego State University and completed his master’s at Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. He is active in the San Diego design community having served as the education director for AIGA San Diego and currently serves as an adviser to San Diego Design Week as the education director for OneClub San Diego.

Kara West, a native San Diegan, earned her MLIS from San Jose State University and a B.A. in art history from UC Santa Cruz. Always drawn to materiality and design, Kara brought 15 years of diverse museum and library collection experience to her position as a materials resource librarian. In her previous role as the San Diego Public Library’s arts and culture exhibition manager, she curated the Central Library Art Gallery. Under her direction, over 150 local artists were exhibited in five years and the library expanded exhibition collaborations with organizations, such as the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library in La Jolla, Comic-Con International, the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., and the Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park. Since joining the Gensler architectural firm, she has continued to champion local artists by organizing local craft events in the office, connecting artists with architects and designers to encourage collaboration. She has also offered her research skills to Design Resilience efforts, contributing to two embodied carbon case studies, most recently presented at Greenbuild. She currently serves as arts chair of the San Diego Unified Port District’s Culture & Design Committee. She has spent two years on the advisory committee for San Diego Design Week.
