Architecture & Gardens of Ancient Japan
January 20, 2007

Clare and Loch Crane first became interested in Japanese architecture when they were students at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin Fellowship. Loch stationed in Japan during the occupation following World War II, and again in 1951-1952, when Clare was able to join him. They traveled to various historic areas in Japan, photographing historic buildings and gardens in Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara and other locations. Their slide presentation will cover these areas and will conclude with a series of photos of remarkable traditional wooden construction techniques and tools.

Loch is a graduate of U.S.C. School of Architecture and had his own firm in San Diego for many years before retiring. Clare’s background is in history with a B.A. from San Diego State University and a Ph.D. from the University of California San Diego.
