The History of Balboa Park: 1867-1909
January 18, 2014

Roger covers growth and development, encompassing commercial development; redevelopment; major public projects; planning; architecture; urban design; and historic preservation. A graduate of UC San Diego, he has been at the U-T since 1974. Roger is a third-generation San Diegan, the grandson of B. Guy Showley, cofounder with his brother Ray of the Showley Brothers Candy Factory in 1905. The Showleys displayed their wares at the Panama-California Exposition in 1915. A new 3-story brick Candy Factory built at Eighth Avenue and K Street in 1924 became a local landmark. It was moved one block east in 2003 to make room for Petco Park, setting a record for the heaviest building ever moved in the United States. Roger has written three books on San Diego history. He lives with his family in Scripps Ranch.
