“Temporary Paradise?” @ 50 and Beyond

Bruce Appleyard will discuss the “Temporary Paradise?” report, prepared for the City of San Diego in 1974 by his father, Donald Appleyard, and Kevin Lynch. Underwritten by the Marston family, the report took a look at the binational region and laid out opportunities for managing growth while preserving the natural landscape. Some of their far-reaching suggestions included redeveloping Lindbergh Field and North Island Naval Air Station into mixed-use residential communities, building a binational airport at the Mexican border, and connecting San Diego Bay with Mission Bay by a canal.
