San Diego’s Future as a World Class City: A Panel Discussion May 19, 2008 Friends of San Diego Architecture has always, in its 23 years of existence, used a slide presentation/discussion format. On May 17th FSDA will present its first ever panel discussion–a one-time only change. San Diego has been awash with controversial issues the last few years that concern, or should concern, everyone living and working in San Diego. Politics, the budget crisis, ruptured infrastructure, lack of affordable housing, traffic woes–these all play a role in our quality of life issues. However, San Diego is full of pleasures and treasures–and the bottom line is, there’s no place we’d rather be. Do we sit on the sidelines or join with those who have positive ideas for the future of San Diego? FSDA is inviting our members and the public to hear Mike Stepner, our moderator, and three well-known San Diego leaders who will present comments and offer suggestions on: What Can Make a City Great, in the Best of Times, and, even, in the Worst of Times? Panelists will be Mary Lydon, Executive Director of the Urban Land Instutute San Diego/Tijuana; Kim Kilkenny, Executive Vice President of Otay Lakes Ranch Co. and a Board Member of CCDC; and Frank Wolden, an artist and Principal of Carrier/Johnson. Mike Stepner arrived in San Diego in 1971 and has worn many hats. He has been a City Planner, San Diego’s only City Architect, a Dean of NewSchool and currently a professor at NewSchool. Whenever an expert is needed to answer a question, the first person to come to mind is Mike Stepner. He has served as FSDA’s mentor for many years and is a champion for a “Great San Diego”. |
