The recently approved Community Plan Update for Mission Valley calls for the addition of 28,000 new residential units and considerable new commercial development. A number of major projects associated with that planned growth are either under way or in planning stages, each including significant new park and open space environments. Schmidt Design Group is currently designing multiple impactful parks and open spaces in Mission Valley including Civita, SDSU Mission Valley, and Riverwalk. Landscape Architect and Planner Glen Schmidt will share details about these and other transformational projects that are part of an open space renaissance in Mission Valley.

Glen is a firm believer that outdoor environments greatly contribute to our quality of life, health, and well-being.  In 1983, Glen founded Schmidt Design Group, Inc. after graduating from the University of California at Davis. The firm was established with the dual mission of balancing artistic expression in design with environmental sensitivity.  Each project is guided by the purpose of creating positive change for the communities in which the firm works.  His 30-person firm is headquartered in San Diego with branch offices in Northern California and Milford, Connecticut.

Examples of Schmidt Design Group’s local work include: San Diego County Waterfront Park; Pacific Highlands Ranch Park; the “Nature’s Bridge to Discovery” trail along the Silver Strand; the Solana Beach Coastal Rail Trail; Cottonwood Creek Park in Encinitas; and, the Stone Brewing World Bistro gardens in Escondido and Liberty Station.

In 2005, Glen was inducted as a Fellow in the American Society of Landscape Architects for “significant works of landscape architecture over an extended period of time.” His firm has been honored with more than 150 local, state, and national awards for design and technical excellence, including 13 local SDAF Orchid awards. Glen also actively donates his time to community services and is currently a member of the Clairemont Community Planning Group.
