“I.D.E.A District: From Vision to Reality”
May 18, 2013

David Malmuth with Pete Garcia, Kevin Heinly, and Terrence Burgess

Two years ago, David Malmuth presented a lecture to the Friends of San Diego Architecture on the development and design principles of the I.D.E.A. District.  It was then a proposal by him and his partner, Pete Garcia, for the redevelopment of the area of our city bounded by Park Blvd. on the west, City College on the north, I-5 on the east, and Market St. on the south.  This is a district of 95 acres, 35 city blocks, in the upper East Village that surrounds the NewSchool of Architecture.

At that time, Mr. Malmuth foresaw an area of innovation, design, education, and the arts – hence I.D.E.A. District – focused on the needs of architecture, advertising, technology, and graphic-, industrial-, and interior-design firms and the talented people who work at them.  The goal was to create a vibrant live/work/play community that fosters a sustainable ecosystem that generates more ideas per square foot.

At our May meeting, Mr. Malmuth will moderate an august panel that will discuss the progress that the I.D.E.A. District vision has made toward becoming a reality and how this initiative can have multiple long-term beneficial impacts on San Diego.  Panelists will be Mr. Garcia; Kevin Heinly, Managing Director of the San Diego office of Gensler Architects, an international design firm with 43 offices worldwide; and Terrence Burgess, Ph.D., President of San Diego City College.

Come to the F.S.D.A.’s May meeting and see just what’s the big I.D.E.A.
