ZERO NET ENERGY and DESIGN/BUILD: THE ALPINE LIBRARY
January 21, 2017
Amanda and Philip are architects at Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects. Last year, FPBA celebrated its 40th year in business. Formerly James McGraw Associates and later McGraw/Baldwin Architects, with James McGraw* and Ken Baldwin as principals, the firm changed its name to Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects in 2006, reflecting its growth and leadership roles of two of its principals, James Ferguson and Philip Pape. The firm is well-known for its biotechnology and advanced technology projects but has also won awards for municipal, higher education, hospitality, and corporate designs. Today’s talk will be about the Alpine Library, the County of San Diego’s first zero net energy building, currently pursuing LEED Gold Certification and ZNE Certification through the Living Building Challenge.
Amanda Schultz received a Bachelor of Architecture degree with a minor in Sustainable Environments from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and is now a Project Manager and Senior Associate at Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects. During her 9 years with the firm and 10 years in the industry, she has specialized in design for civic projects as well as life science, high tech and clean tech industries. Key projects include facilities for the County and City of San Diego, City of El Cajon, La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology, Biomed Realty Trust, and Healthcare Properties. As a LEED Accredited Professional and Designated Design-Build Professional, she is passionate about sustainable design, lean construction, and high-performance teaming.
Philip Pape received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Andrews University. He was named Principal at Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects in 2002 and is the firm’s design director for shell construction. Phil has spent his career developing great relationships with his clients and team members. He believes early team collaboration returns the finest projects with rewarding experiences. Some of the best examples of his work can be seen in his many award-winning projects: leading edge technology building designs for educational clients; corporate headquarters for Fortune 500 companies; numerous municipal projects; and now, the Alpine Library. He is licensed in Arizona and California and is NCARB certified.
*A Little Bit of History
In 1976, James McGraw founded James McGraw Associates as a two-man office with James McGraw as architect and Kennon Baldwin as apprentice. In 1978, Baldwin became a licensed architect and partner in 1989. The 1990’s brought presidency to Ken Baldwin and the firm’s name changed to McGraw/Baldwin Architects. Early on, the firm designed much of the lab space for the region’s biotech industry. Both McGraw and Baldwin encouraged the biotechnology pioneers to explore the San Diego area when looking for new sites to build their very specialized buildings and bring about a new economic opportunity to the area. McGraw was influential in bringing the merger of the San Diego Biocommerce Association and the Biotechnology Industry Council to form BIOCOM/San Diego. Baldwin has carried on McGraw’s legacy and has been a member of BIOCOM’s board and executive committee.
In 1996, James McGraw passed away and James Ferguson became a partner. In 2002, Phil Pape joined the partnership. The firm has continued to grow in size and diversity of projects. It has built much of its reputation through its involvement with the biotech industry and its emphasis on sustainability—working with each client to incorporate as many elements of sustainability as it can into a project, from energy systems to carpeting and construction materials.
Ken Baldwin retired last year after 38 years with the firm but has left the company in good hands and just needs to travel throughout San Diego County to view the “McGraw/Baldwin” legacy.
